The Rotary Club of Wynberg held its President Induction at the Western Province Cricket Club in Rondebosch on Thursday, June 19, welcoming Justin Schonegevel as president for the new Rotary year starting Tuesday, July 1.

Mr Schonegevel was inducted in the presence of club members, assistant governor Susan O'Hagan, and invited guests.

On the night, the club presented a Paul Harris Fellow award to Alan Jackson and a Paul Harris Fellow Sapphire award to outgoing president David Barnard.

Mr Jackson was recognised for his steadfast support in district remediation efforts and ongoing club service.

Mr Barnard received the Sapphire in honour of his 30 years of service, during which he twice served as club president and led the Norway Liaison Committee, which distributes bursaries to Cape Flats schools.

As is tradition, the Paul Harris Fellow is awarded to members who go beyond the call of duty in service to the club and community. A Sapphire recognises a member who has previously received the Paul Harris Fellow.

Reflecting on the past year, Mr Barnard highlighted the induction of three new members and the growing strength of the club, which enabled the successful hosting of Last Night of the Proms in April.

As the club’s largest annual charity event, all proceeds were distributed to local charities. He also reaffirmed that Rotary is open to all and valued for the fellowship it offers.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Schonegevel addressed the Rotary International Action Plan, aimed at increasing Rotary’s impact for both members and communities.

He emphasised that membership growth must also include making meetings and club activities meaningful experiences for current members.

Having previously served as president in 2020–2021, Mr Schonegevel noted that this term would be different, as his first was constrained by Covid-related lockdowns.

“This term,” he said, “is bound to be more exciting!”
