While emergency legislation and the creation of committees to investigate the many issues in our country may seem to be steps in the right direction, legislation and committees will not solve these immediate issues. An old saying comes to mind: "Actions speak louder than words."
We are known to be a nation of creating a committee to investigate the subcommittee put together to oversee the committee created to evaluate the judiciary committee brought about by concerns of a parliamentary committee initially.
Confused? So am I. I'm guessing everyone else too. At least we excel in the creation of committees and are committed. Or should be!
While one makes light (pun intended) of the issues plaguing our beautiful nation and affecting the many millions, one must question this method of seeking solutions. Could it be that stalling tactics are being employed in the hope that the problems will disappear? Admittedly, it is very easy to bury your head in the sand and imagine things differently. Ignorance is bliss, they say. As concerned and troubled citizens, “they” need to be confronted and held accountable for their actions, or perhaps inactions in this instance, and this “bliss” tackled once and for all.
But we are intent on establishing committees with money, time and other valuable resources being wasted with nothing much – if anything – being resolved. Money and resources necessary to bring about much needed change. The issues remain and, more often than not, a few fortunate ones benefit.
It is sad that we have become so accustomed to this, buying time, spending money as a way of proving that action is being taken, conditioned to accept mediocrity, believing that another committee and more legislation are the answers. Action and results are the answers!
Perhaps our only consolation is that “it’s always darkest before the dawn”. A new dawn? A new SA? The struggle continues…
