The Wynberg Boys’ High School music department has a lot to celebrate this year. Some of that success includes doing phenomenally well at the Cape Town and Kaapse Afrikaanse eisteddfodau.

The school’s steel band won their category medal as did the vocal ensemble winning Best Vocal Ensemble (Boys Grade 8-12) at the Cape Town Eisteddfod. The jazz band and combined WBHS/WGHS concert band were category medal winners at both the Cape Town and the Kaapse Afrikaanse eisteddfodau.

Grade 8 pupil Caleb Hugo was awarded the medal for Best Pianist in his age group at the Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod, and matric pupil Kyle van Eyssen was awarded Best String Player in his age group at the Cape Town Eisteddfod.

In addition, the school choir of 118 boys and the guitar ensemble were awarded diplomas (90%+) and the string ensemble was awarded high honours (85%+).

The school has had a full calendar of musical events this year including a battle of the bands, a concert in the quad, the combined Wynberg schools orchestral concert, a choral evening, the Celtic in Cape Town Pipe Band Festival and four nights of the musical Grease.

The music department, which includes three further full-time members of staff and seven part-time staff, will have four of our bands touring the Garden Route in 2025.
