The World Belly Dance Day event will take place at Gardens Commercial High School in Paddock Avenue on Saturday May 12, from 10.30am to 4.30pm. This year, World Belly Dance Day will celebrate its 10th anniversary with the filming of the belly dance inspired documentary, This Side Of Fabulous. Some 200 belly dancers from 22 studios across Cape Town will be performing, and dancers range in age from 5 to 65. The day’s events will include performances from beginners through to professional performers, and will showcase a variety of styles, from traditional folk, classical oriental dance through to American tribal style and tribal fusion. Vendors will also trade throughout the day, selling food and belly-dance related goods. Spectators can join a quick belly dance lesson and group performance at 1.30pm. All proceeds raised on the day will be donated to Rape Crisis, Cape Town Trust. Entry costs R80 and R40 for pensioners and children under 12.
