Soroptimist International is celebrating its 100th anniversary and has awarded Lisette Genseberger, of Plumstead, for her sterling work.
The volunteer movement for women has a network of about 72 000 members in 121 countries. As part of its centenary celebration, it asked for names to be submitted for its #WhoIsShe programme, which highlights members’ contributions over the past 100 years.
The Cape of Good Hope Club, which was started almost 60 years ago, had two of its members selected: Lisette Genseberger for her part, as president of the Soroptimist International Southern African Network, in the formation of the African Federation; and the late Audrey Walden Smith, who died in 2016, aged 97, for her contribution in the field of education in South Africa.
Soroptimist International works for peace, particularly in improving the lives of women and girls.
“Despite restrictions on personal contact due to the coronavirus, the Cape of Good Hope club has continued to support projects during the past year,” said Ms Genseberger.
“We have provided food parcels for iKhaya le Themba in Imizamo Yethu, Kalk Bay Primary School and care packages for Saartjie Baartman Home in Surrey Estate.”
Recently they visited Douglas Murray Home for the aged in Retreat to do chiropody treatments for residents.
