Sunsets and waterfalls at Schoenstatt
Two young women who have written a book of poetry introduced the public to their work, at the Schoenstatt Estate in Constantia, on Sunday.
Toni Erasmus and Cindy Jacobs have been friends since they met some 13 years ago in Sunday school at St Anne's Catholic Church in Steenberg. They chose Schoenstatt for the launch of Sunset and Waterfalls because it’s where the idea for the book, their first, was born.
“We came here on a girls camp,” says Cindy, 26, a former teacher from Diep River. “Our friendship blossomed and grew, bravely overcoming broken hearts and understanding how our purpose was birthed in our greatest pain.”
The book is a compilation of 300 poems with 300 accompanying line-art illustrations by Carter Constant, of Steenberg, depicting key moments in the authors’ lives.
Toni, 25, from Steenberg, says the book “takes the reader on a journey, unmasking and revealing pieces of their heart through raw, honest and open poetry”.
Cindy says they hope to bring “a sense of eloquence and lightness to the topic of women and children’s scars that lie deep beneath the surface of their beauty”.
She adds: “Creating a better country for all lies in the voices of our women and children. When you empower a woman, you are empowering an individual to contribute successfully as a better mother, wife, sister, businesswoman, teacher, friend and citizen to the world.”
