Rotary and MOTHS donate piano to needy school

Rotary and MOTHS (Memorable Order of the Tin Hats) have teamed up to open the musical doors of opportunity at Westlake Primary School.

Having heard of the dire needs at the school, Cape of Good Hope Rotarian Bev Frieslich contacted Geoff von Klemperer, a Rotarian of the Constantia Rotary Club which works with the school, and suggested that they take up the offer of a piano.

“The current Rotary International theme, Rotary Opens Doors of Opportunities, was made a happy reality,” said Mr Von Klemperer after the handover of the piano.

Finding that times have changed, Fish Hoek-based Moth Battledress Shellhole said they felt that the grand old lady (piano) needed to be put to better use elsewhere.

“So, thanks to the excellent liaison between the Fish Hoek Moths and the Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope, finding a suitable recipient for the much loved and well used old piano in the Moth Shellhole, was easily achieved,” said Moths Commander of the Battledress Shellhole Commander Ricky de Wet.

Last week the piano was handed over to Westlake Primary school acting principal Jodi Dawson.

“We were excited to hear that our very needy and under-resourced school had been chosen from a list of potential groups to receive the very generous donation of the piano. It's a fantastic asset to our institution and will light up the lives of the schoolchildren when the sounds of singing and piano playing resonate through the school buildings," she said.
