Heritage application for MyCiTi
The public has until Thursday August 19 to comment on a City application for demolitions, property expropriation and other changes to make way for Phase 2A of MyCiTi (“Wynberg MyCiTi picking up steam”, Bulletin July 22).
The application supports a heritage impact assessment (HIA) for the proposed development of a one-way road system in the Wynberg CBD, according to heritage practitioner Bridget O’Donoghue.
The project entails turning the existing Main Road into a south-bound one-way and constructing a new northbound one-way to its west by joining various existing roads with new portions, some of which will affect 32 properties, half of which are state owned. Thirteen require full property acquisitions and 19 require partial property acquisitions.
Ms O’Donoghue said Heritage Western Cape (HWC) did not require an archaeological study, but, due to potential sensitivity in the area, the project team had requested this brief study to support the findings of the HIA.
The project team is made up of O’Donoghue Heritage Practitioners, GAPP Architects and Urban Designers, ASHA Consulting, CES Environmental and Social Advisory Services and SMEC Professional Architects.
Work in the Wynberg area will affect several plots to the west of Main Road, from Waterbury Road in the south to Riverstone Road in the north. The 2.95km stretch includes portions of Church Street, Maynard Street, Glaren Road, Millbank Road, Piers Road, Egglestone Road, Vriedenhof Road, Wellington Walk, Langley Road, Wilson Road, Malton Road, Kemms Road and Waterbury Road.
Property expropriations are due to take place between October and February 2023, according to the social-impact assessment report.
Construction should begin in July 2025 and end 30 months later, in October 2027.
The public participation process for the HIA began on Tuesday July 20 with adverts in newspapers, according to Ms O’Donoghue.
Details on the application have been available since Friday July 23 at we.transfer.com. The link to the 246MB file will expire and must be downloaded before Friday July 30.
