The 27th Cape Town International Kite Festival was reduced to a series of online and small pop-up events. This one was at Zandvlei Nature Reserve but inclement weather kept the kites grounded.
The Cape Town International Kite Festival, the flagship fund-raiser for Cape Mental Health, suffered a tragic blow this year due to Covid-19.
The 27th festival went hybrid, with various smaller events held online and in smaller venues across the peninsula.
At Zandvlei in Muizenberg, what was usually a two-day occasion, was reduced to a pop-up event, held on Saturday October 23. However, even here, strong winds and rain kept all the big kites grounded.
The goal was to raise over R100 000 to continue providing free mental health-care services.
Dr Ingrid Daniels, CEO of Cape Mental Health and president of the World Federation for Mental Health, said: “Mental health is regarded as the third highest burden of disease in South Africa, but remains the most neglected aspect of health care.”
She said the sector competed with other medical conditions including the health costs of the Covid-19 pandemic and vaccine roll-out.
