Wynberg Rotary supports Plumstead home for girls

The Rotary Club of Wynberg handed over a new gas stove to St Michael’s Child and Youth Care Centre, in Plumstead, on Friday September 16.

The building in Hemyock Road is home to 25 girls aged 13 to 18. Most are wards of the state, refugees and orphans. They come from broken homes and have experienced abuse, neglect and violence.

Managing director Rosemary Tsaurai said the girls were thrilled with the stove and were looking forward to doing some baking.

The Rotary Club of Wynberg president, Monique Bayes, said the home, which is one of their projects, needed a lot of work, including upgrading the kitchen and bathrooms, painting the interior of the building and replacing bedding and the leaking roof.

Members of the club were prepared to do the work but donations, such as paint, were needed, she said.

The club also offers support to the Wynberg Children’s Sexual Offences Court and the new Thuthuzela Crisis Centre at Victoria Hospital.
