Have your say on MyCiTi stop locations
A public participation process will kick off soon to pinpoint MyCiTi bus stop locations.
A presentation of the MyCiti bus route between Wynberg through Constantia to Hout Bay was given at the recent Subcouncil-20 meeting held on Wednesday September 21.
Giving the presentation, the City’s head of integrated transport and environmental communications, Ester Moag said the City had learned many lessons from Phase 1 of the MyCiTi roll-out.
Some bus stops were allocated without adequate public participation and at least one stop in Atlantis turned out to be on a “very dangerous spot”, she said. They are therefore adamant that the public should have as much say, electronically and in person as to the possible stop location decision-making process.
From the maps shown at the meeting it appears that there will be at least one stop at Wynberg Main Road for the MyCiTi service between the Cape Flats and the future revamped Public Transport Interchange (PTI).
The route will then have stops along Wynberg Main Road before passing along Constantia Main Road and under the Van Der Stel highway ending in Hout Bay where a MyCiTi route has been in place between the CBD for some time.
The return route will enter Wynberg along Kemms Road and leave via Brodie Road W6 couplet that is to be constructed parallel to Wynberg Main Road and then into Riverstone Road before continuing to the PTI.
No timelines are available at present as to when construction work will take place.
Construction of the Brodie Road couplet W6 and bus stops is expected to start only later, according to Ms Moag.
She said this is because there are many issues that still need to be finalised including acquisition of some properties that belong to residents but are in the way of the new road.
Work on the new PTI is expected to start in 2024.
Wynberg Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association said this will mean a huge relief to residents as it should provide enough parking space for taxis so that they will no longer have to use suburban parking spaces during the day or park illegally in the streets surrounding the PTI.
The association said they are happy that the City seems really committed to ask for and take seriously input from the public about where the best locations for the bus stops will be.
The City’s mayoral committee approved a R35 million tender in 2016 for the design and monitoring of the construction of bus stations for Phase 2A of its MyCiTi bus service between Mitchell’s Plain and Claremont, and Strandfontein and Ottery.
The total estimated cost for all infrastructure including stations of Phase 2A based on 2018 projections, is R4.7 billion. By comparison, Phase 1A cost R2.9bn.
A public participation process to find the best stop locations will run from Monday October 10 to Wednesday November 30.
