In two separate incidents, cyclists riding on Spaanschemat River Road, in Constantia, have been attacked and robbed of their possessions in the early hours of the morning.

According to Kirstenhof police spokeswoman Sergeant Deidre Solomon, the first incident occurred on Tuesday November 15, at around 5.15am, when a white Quantum stopped in front of four cyclists and six men with knives jumped out.

The cyclists were robbed of their possessions, which included cellphones and bicycles to the value of R350 000. Two of the cyclists sustained injuries and were treated at the nearest hospital.

The following morning, Wednesday November 16, on the same road at 4.50am, a cyclist was forced off the road by a white Quantum and fell to the ground. Three men jumped out, one armed with a knife, and they took the victim’s R8000 bike.

Sergeant Solomon said police suspected the same perpetrators were behind both incidents but so far no arrests have been made.

In a Facebook post, Constantia Watch said it had increased patrols in the area, especially from 4am to 6am.

It advised cyclists to ride in pairs or groups, be vigilant, keep cellphones out of sight, inform others of your route, carry some form of identification, and save the Constantia Watch’s control room number (086 000 2669).
