The Bergvliet Writer’s Circle celebrates 50 years of storytelling this March.

Wordsmiths, lovers of words, and both novice and published writers are welcome to join the group, which meets every second Saturday of the month at a member’s home in Diep River.

According to the group’s secretary, Catherine Harris, the inaugural meeting of the Bergvliet Writer’s Circle took place in March 1973.

“It was set up by a group of keen and aspiring writers that wanted to encourage and support their shared love of writing in all genres. While there have been many changes over the past 50 years, this vibrant and lively group is still going strong to this day.”

The group encourages and supports writers, both new and experienced, to develop their skills.

“Members have varying levels of writing experience. Some members may not have written creatively since leaving school, others are regular contributors, and some are lucky enough to be published. Each month, everyone is encouraged to submit a short piece on a nominated topic, which is then critiqued and shared at the following meeting,“ Ms Harris said.

“The highlight of the year is the awards evening, usually held in November with guest speakers, dinner, wine and occasionally song. This is a chance for writers to be recognised for their efforts over the past year with awards being given for many and varied categories and genres.”
