Kirstenhof’s once-neglected Apollo Park has been given a makeover, and the community celebrated its new look with the Spring in Apollo Park fair there last Saturday.
Kirstenhof and Environs Residents Association (KERA), ward councillor Carolynne Franklin, the City and local businesses had all helped to turn the park around, said the event’s organiser, Haylee Dugmore (“Kirstenhof hosts Apollo Park fund-raiser this weekend,” Bulletin, September 25).
A reptile show, jumping castles, soccer and putt-putt were among the day’s attractions along with a chance to play with Aid 4 Animals In Distress’s puppies and Barefoot Rescue’s kittens.
Kirstenhof Crime Watch sold boerewors rolls and KERA held a raffle to raise funds for their projects.
The day saw the unveiling of an eco-bench, which cubs and scouts from the 1st Kirstenhof Sea Scout Group built using 1000 eco-bricks.
1st Kirstenhof's Sea Scout of the Year Carla Joubert led the park’s opening ceremony as the group’s flag was hoisted. Then scout group leader and event MC Neil Kohler and Ms Dugmore performed the ceremonial cutting of a bright green ribbon.
“In a time when we spend much time indoors and on our devices, events like this encourage people of all ages to step outside, enjoy the fresh air and sunshine and connect with one another. We are so grateful for the tremendous support we’ve received from residents and businesses for this event,” said Ms Dugmore.
KERA played an important role in helping maintain the area’s parks, she said.
“Well-kept play parks and green spaces make Kirstenhof a highly desirable neighbourhood. For KERA to continue in its efforts, we need more residents to join as members and contribute to initiatives like Spring in Apollo Park,” Ms Dugmore said.
Describing the event as a “true community collaboration”, Ms Franklin said it “shows the power of working together towards a common goal of cohesiveness and mutual unity”.
