The bodies of five people swept away in flash floods in Lamontville on Tuesday evening were recovered by rescue teams amidst further warnings of more heavy rain on the way.
The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) confirmed that disaster management teams had recovered the bodies of two adult males and three children who were swept into a canal.
"Search and rescue operations were conducted tirelessly to locate the victims. This devastating incident occurred amidst heavy rainfall that has impacted large portions of the province, causing significant damage and flooding," Cogta stated.
In a separate incident, two more bodies were discovered along Brighton and Ansteys beaches on the Bluff, adding to the mounting toll of the severe weather conditions.
Cogta MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and urged residents to remain vigilant amid the unpredictable weather.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple warnings as heavy rainfall continues to pose a threat:
Yellow Level 1 Warning: Damaging winds are expected between Table Bay and Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape, as well as along the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
Yellow Level 2 Warning: Disruptive rain could lead to localized flooding along the KwaZulu-Natal coast and adjacent interior.
Yellow Level 2 Warning: Severe thunderstorms bringing heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning, and hail are expected in the extreme western parts of the North West and the north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape. These conditions may result in localized flooding of roads and settlements, as well as damage to infrastructure.
Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to take precautions, avoid crossing flooded roads, and remain indoors where possible. Emergency services remain on high alert as further rainfall is anticipated.
