The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation and the Kolisi Foundation are joining forces to host a fund-raising cyclethon at Canal Walk on Saturday, August 23.
The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation has supported families for more than 46 years, with 13 homes nationwide for those needing accommodation while their children undergo cancer treatment. In the Western Cape, CHOC operates homes in Plumstead and Sybrand Park, as well as a lodge on the Tygerberg Hospital premises.
The cyclethon, which is sponsored by a gym group and cargo company, invites members of the public, corporates, and community groups to cycle for a cause, with every spin making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children and families across the country.
CHOC CEO, Hedley Lewis said this is more than just an event, "it’s a movement of awareness and action.”
“An hour on a bike might challenge you, but it’s nothing compared to the strength children show every day as they fight cancer,” he said.
Mr Lewis said that he is proud that his organisation is joining forces with the Kolisi Foundation, which he says is a prestigious organisation whose values of dignity, care, and community resonate deeply with CHOC’s mission.
Lauren Budde, partnerships manager at the Kolisi Foundation, said activations like this mean a lot to their organisation.
“It paves the way for collaborative fund-raising efforts, where resources are pooled and shared in a meaningful and impactful way. It’s incredibly inspiring to see support from both civil society and the corporate sector come together to back this event; it's partnerships like these that power change,” she said.
The Cyclethon will feature multiple spinning sessions throughout the morning. Tickets cost R160 a person and can be booked by visiting https://choc.org.za/events/
