Founded in 1841, Wynberg Boys’ High School is one of South Africa’s oldest schools, celebrating 184 years of history and tradition.

Its first headmaster, John McNaughton, laid the foundations for what has become a leading institution in boys’ education.

The current principal, Deon Scheepers, said the school’s motto, Supera Moras, meaning “overcome difficulties”, reflects its ethos of resilience and perseverance. He added that Wynberg Boys continues to balance academic excellence with cultural, service and sporting pursuits, fostering well-rounded young men prepared for the future.

Wynberg Boys’ High mission is to nurture character and accountability alongside academic achievement.

In an era where single-sex education is often questioned, the school remains committed to its boys-only model, arguing that it allows for teaching methods and environments specifically designed to meet the needs of boys.

What sets Wynberg Boys apart is unique because it blends history, tradition, spirit, and modern excellence in a way that few schools manage, creating not just a place of learning, but a lifelong brotherhood,” said Mr Scheepers.

Wynberg Boys has produced many distinguished alumni, including international cricket legend Jacques Kallis (class of 1993), Constitutional Court judge Justice Owen Rogers (class of 1976),  and Springbok rugby great and entrepreneur Rob Louw (class of 1973).

Later this month, the school will open the Jacques Kallis indoor cricket centre - a world-class facility honouring one of its most celebrated Old Boys.

“Overlooking the Jacques Kallis oval, the centre will provide state-of-the-art nets, equipment, and year-round training opportunities. The event will be marked with a community celebration, adding to Wynberg Boys’ proud sporting heritage,” said Mr Scheepers.

At Wynberg Boys’ High School, Mr Scheepers said, “We are committed to creating an environment that inspires innovation, excellence, and a love of learning in every boy.”

Mr Scheepers said: “Our vision embraces cutting-edge learning spaces, with upgraded science laboratories to nurture curiosity and discovery, and state-of-the-art sporting facilities, including floodlights on the second astro to ensure our boys can excel on the field, day or night. We also aim to create a vibrant cultural hub through an enhanced music department that fosters creativity, expression, and collaboration, along with a stronger sense of community and belonging through the transformation of the Baxter Amphitheatre into a larger enclosed theatre-styled space."

These projects, he said, form part of our greater commitment to equipping Wynberg Boys’ young men with the skills, character and vision to thrive in a changing world.
