Kirstenhof resident June Dickie, 70, swam 50km during September to raise funds for Wycliffe Bible Translation, a non-profit organisation.

Wycliffe Bible Translation is a global organisation that translates the Bible into different spoken languages around the world, with its South African branch based in Johannesburg.

Ms Dickie, along with her colleagues Alan Webster, Christoff, and Louwnique Kok, each swam the equivalent of a Midmar Mile every day in September, raising just under R90 000 to support their work in 24 language communities across Southern Africa.

While Ms Dickie did her daily swims at her local gym in Steenberg, she did a few swims at St James tidal pool, and in the final week of September, she joined Mr Webster and Mr Kok in Johannesburg to finish up their final mileages to each cover their 50 km distance for the month.

The swim was initiated by director Mr Webster as Wycliffe Bible Translation South Africa marks 50 years of service this year. Ms Dickie has been with the organisation for more than 35 years, having worked primarily in northern Mozambique among the Mwani people, alongside her Fish Hoek colleagues Sebastian and Karen Floor.

“In Pemba, I swam regularly across the bay with the beautiful coral fish, but here I was grateful for the local gym,” she said.
