The Naruna Estate Residents’ Association (NERA) in Plumstead is urging its neighbours, friends, and local businesses to help those in their community who are struggling to make ends meet ahead of this festive season.
NERA will hold a community fund-raiser at 33 Coombe Road, Plumstead, on Saturday, December 6, from 9am. They are encouraging the community to donate any unwanted items for their fund-raising market, where all funds would go towards their Christmas event on Saturday, December 20.
NERA chairperson,Beverley Strong, said their organisation has, for the past five years, been providing support to their pensioners, less fortunate families, and homeless individuals in their area through food, toiletries, school supplies, and basic necessities.
“This Christmas, we need your help more than ever to continue these efforts and make the season brighter for those in need,” she said.
NERA is urging the community to support the most vulnerable residents by donating groceries, including non-perishable items such as canned goods, rice, pasta, and soup, as well as other long-lasting essentials. Toiletries, such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toilet paper, and deodorant, can also make a significant difference.
Stationery, including pens, pencils, notebooks, and other basic items, will help children prepare for the start of the school year. Ms Strong said monetary donations are also welcome and will be used directly to purchase food hampers, school supplies, and toiletries for distribution.
Ms Strong said that their organisation distributes food twice a week to those in need, and they aim to provide a special Christmas hamper to every family and individual who relies on their services. She said that the last week of each month is critical, as it helps their Sassa recipients who have little to nothing before receiving their pension.
If anyone would like to donate towards NERA’s cause in serving the most vulnerable, they can drop off essential items at 33 Coombe Road, Plumstead, or call 074 341 8252.
