Three men were arrested in connection with an alleged housebreaking and theft incident in Camps Bay on Sunday night, December 28.
According to police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala, officers responded to a complaint at White Cliffs in Camps Bay shortly before 10pm that night.
“Upon arrival at the address, they spotted stolen items outside. They went in and found three male suspects inside the house, who attempted to flee but were apprehended on the spot,” said Constable Gwala.
She added that the suspects, all aged 42, were detained at Camps Bay Police Station.
The Camps Bay City Improvement District (CBCID) said its control room received a frantic call from a resident reporting that three suspicious individuals had forced entry into an apartment block.
CBCID response officers, together with a private security company, arrived at the scene, where the suspects allegedly abandoned the stolen items they had gathered and attempted to escape via a balcony before realising they were three floors above ground.
In a statement, CBCID said the suspects had disabled the power supply and forced open both the Trellidoor and the front door of the apartment.
"As CBCID and PPA response entered the apartment in the dark, they were attacked by the suspects armed with a crowbar, wrench and screw drivers. Our response managed to overpower and subdue the suspects and place them in handcuffs,” the CID said.
The suspects are believed to be part of a roof burglary crew that gains access to homes through rooftops, operating across Cape Town.
CBCID added that it was later established that the suspects had also attempted to break into a neighbouring apartment, damaging the locks on both the Trellidoor and the front door.
Police investigation is ongoing.
