Residents of PlumRus Retirement Centre in Plumstead have been on a mission to reduce plastic waste, spending the last two years creating eco-bricks.

Eco-bricks are simple yet powerful tools for recycling: empty 2-litre plastic bottles are stuffed with small plastic items like clingwrap, old toothbrushes, pens, chocolate wrappers, and pill backings. One large black bag of tiny plastic waste is enough to fill a single bottle, turning trash into a resource for building and community projects.

Belinda van Niekerk, communication and marketing manager, said that they had planned to build a bench out of eco-bricks and had succeeded.

She said that the group had been very enthusiastic, constantly reminding each other that they weren’t just building a bench but were saving the planet.

"Just before Christmas, they were finally able to sit on the bench."

She mentioned that one admirer had commented on how much plastic had been sequestered from the landfill, and that he had also embraced the eco-brick initiative.

Ms Van Niekerk encouraged others to get involved as well.
