Residents gathered at the Meadowridge Association Football Club (MAFC) fields on Saturday, February 7, for the girls division trials.

Ward 73 Councillor Eddie Andrews attended the event, where he opened proceedings for aspiring young footballers to showcase their skills ahead of the upcoming season.

Mr Andrews highlighted the importance of youth sport and active community engagement in Meadowridge. “I praise the dedication of the players, coaches, and volunteers in acknowledging how grassroots sport fosters teamwork, confidence, and healthy lifestyles among young residents,” he said.

Mr Andrews also encouraged more families to get involved in community sport programs and supported initiatives that aim to expand opportunities for girls in football.

MAFC offers junior football for girls from 6 to 16 years old, with teams competing across multiple age groups and divisions under the Cape Town Tygerberg Football Association framework.

Head of the girls' division at MAFC, Nisaa Daniels, said that it was a successful football trial as over 50 girls attended.

Ms Daniels also thanked Mr Andrews for attending. “He was sociable; he spoke to all the players, parents, and the coaching staff,” she said.

Ms Daniels said that their football club was growing, especially after their under-12 team won the Tygerberg knock-out tournament last September.

Ms Daniels said that from their junior teams, they also have a senior women’s team and would encourage any women to join. Ms Daniels said the club was looking for new goalkeepers across all their teams.
