The Rotary Club of Wynberg’s president-elect and community services director, Stacy Edwards, is gearing up to take on the gruelling Cape Town Cycle Tour in support of animal welfare.
Ms Edwards, from Kirstenhof, will tackle the full 109km route on Sunday, March 8, raising much-needed funds for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.
An avid outdoor enthusiast, she enjoys activities such as scuba diving, tandem paragliding, snorkelling, and hiking. She took up road cycling three years ago and has since participated in the Cape Town Cycle Tour, previously completing the 42km route.
“I have always wanted to do the Cycle Tour to push myself out of my comfort zone, so while I am nervous about the physical challenges of the 109km route, I am also excited to be finally fulfilling a long-term challenge at the age of 50,” she said.
Ms Edwards chose to raise funds for the SPCA because she has always been an animal lover and previously volunteered for the organisation.
“The work that the SPCA does is not funded by the government at all, so they rely on the goodwill of the public through donations to keep operating,” she said.
Ms Edwards previously raised R20 000 during her past Cape Town Cycle Tour rides, with R10 000 each donated by the Rotary Club of Wynberg and the Rotary Club of Claremont.
The Rotary Club of Wynberg will further support the Cycle Tour by enthusiastically marshalling at the end of the Blue Route to ensure the safety of cyclists.
SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abrahams said they had a long-standing relationship with the rotary club and were honoured to have a representative riding for them as part of Team SPCA.
“We are also so encouraged that Ms Edwards, after challenging herself to the 42km route last year, has set her sights on the full 109km route this year. We salute her bravery and recognise that she is pushing herself to do more to raise more funds for our work with animals,” she said.
Ms Edwards has set up a GivenGain page, Help Us Protect Animals with the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, which has already raised more than R22 000.
