Plumstead Meals on Wheels will take a break from Thursday December 20 and reopen on Monday January 21.
The Plumstead branch delivers meals three times a week – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – to between 500 and 600 people, most of them poverty stricken, lonely and elderly.
They also have two satellite stores, one in Westlake and Precious Little Angels Daycare Centre in Philippi.
They are now asking for donations of food to make up gift hampers to deliver to 150 people and help them over the festive period.
Meals on Wheels Plumstead held its Christmas lunch on Wednesday November 28 for 70 guests and volunteers. The decor was put together by volunteers led by Judith Martin. Pastor Aaron Otto, of the 7th Day Adventist Church, opened the proceedings with a prayer of thanksgiving.
Stephanie Jones introduced herself to everyone as this is her first year in the role of centre manager.
Director of Meals on Wheels Cape Town Pastor Norman Ryan thanked the volunteers and permanent staff who helped collect guests, serve the lunch and clean up afterwards.
Each guest went home with a gift.
If you can help, they are looking for donations of tinned fish, two-minute noodles, jelly powder mix, baked beans, fish oil, 250g bags of sugar, tea bags (packs of 40), 1kg bags of cake flour, small bags of mielie meal, apricot jam and long-life milk.
