Traffic officers on patrol in Muizenberg arrested four suspects, aged between 25 and 33, on Tuesday, for car-remote jamming and theft, according to mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith.
The suspects were arrested on charges related to the possession of stolen property, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of car-breaking tools, fraud, remote jamming and theft out of a vehicle.
Officers responding to a remote jamming/theft out of a vehicle incident in the Kirstenhof area had spotted a vehicle heading towards Sunrise Circle, and after pulling it over had found a remote-jamming device, false licence plates, tools used to break into cars, and items reported stolen, said Mr Smith.
The suspects were wanted in connection with crimes committed elsewhere, including Gqeberha, he said.
“It appears that they have been engaging in criminal acts in at least one other province. I hope that the investigators are able to piece together all of their alleged misdeeds and that they are appropriately punished,” he said.
Motorists should check their car boots and doors were locked to avoid falling prey to remote jammers, he said.
