A seal rescue centre in Hout Bay needs help after a huge wave left a hole in its wall during this week’s stormy weather.
The wave hit the rear of the Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre near its yearling pool at about 8am on Tuesday, says operations director Kim Krynauw.
“We would appreciate any help with securing the gaping hole that the wave caused. For now, we tried to secure it with wood planks and some fencing.
“We’ve been struggling to keep our heads above the waves and are appealing to any construction company for assistance to reinforce the area where the wave rocked us.
“Our staff managed to secure the area with our temporary structures. Sadly, we need help to replace the walling as the steel is rusting beneath the concrete,“ Ms Krynauw said.
None of the seals had been injured in the incident, she said.
The centre says it has seen an alarming number of injured Cape fur seals lately (“Spike in number of injured seals, says support group,” Sentinel, July 5).
The rescue group is awaiting quotes for repair costs, but Ms Krynauw said they estimated it would cost more than R30 000 to replace 32 metres of pre-cast concrete wall.
