Wynberg Boys’ High School will host the WindWorx Symphonic Wind Ensemble concert next weekend.
The opening concert on Friday May 18 will see Faan Malan conducting the Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble and the bands from Wynberg Boys’ and WindWorx under direction of Peter Catzavelos and Sean Kierman respectively.
On Saturday May 19 about 500 musicians, making up 14 wind bands from around the Cape Peninsula and further afield, will be evaluated, non-competitively, by adjudicators Felicia Lesch, of Stellenbosch University Music Conservatory, and Kenny Leibbrant, of the SA Navy Band.
Most bands will also stage an informal performance in the amphitheatre of the school where festival goers can enjoy food and drinks available on site.
The participating bands are Bellville High School junior and symphonic wind bands, CPO Music Academy Wind Band, Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble, DF Malan High School senior and tour wind bands, Durbanville High School senior and symphonic wind bands, Edgemead High School Jazz Band, Fairbairn College Jazz Band, Musica Perpetua from Stellenbosch, Somerset College Preparatory School Jazz Band. West Coast Youth Symphonic Winds and Wynberg Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools Concert Band.
The festival ends with a gala concert plus massed bands with more than 350 players on stage.
The opening concert on Friday starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are R30 for adults and R10 for pupils. The WindWorx Fanfare evaluations on the Saturday are from 1pm to 6pm.
