The City of Cape Town applied for grant funding from National Government to repair the Southfield canal - because it was identified as part of last winter’s disaster events ("Safety concerns over deteriorating Southfield canals", Bulletin, March 6).
The application was sent in September 2024 and the City received approval for the grant funding from National Government on Wednesday February 12.
The project has been scoped and the contractor has provided the City with a cost estimate. Work is anticipated to start late March 2025. Estimated completion date for the construction works is around May 2025.
With regards to the clearing of vegetation growing in the canals, the City’s Catchment, Stormwater and River Management Department has cleaned the canal as scheduled between 2023 and 2025 on the following dates: June 2023, October 2023, June 2024 and December 2024. The canal will next be cleaned during the repair period.
