Primrose edge out Young Peoples in a muddy quarter-final clash
Primrose Rugby Football Club secured a hard-fought semi-final spot after beating Paarl’s Young Peoples 26-21 in a muddy affair at Rosmead Avenue on Saturday, August 24.
Chairman of Primrose, Walis Brown acknowledged the tough challenge presented by their opponents in the WP Super League C clash.
The win marks a significant achievement for Primrose as they continue their quest for promotion to the next division.
“We achieved what we set out to do and that was to make the semi-finals. It was a long and hard season, but I think we did very well. Most of our teams ended either first or second on the log, which is promising for our future,” said Brown.
“Today was a tough game, just edging out Young Peoples 26-21. Our team can play much better than they did today, but that’s what happens when it gets to a knockout. The pressure is on,” said Brown.
“Well done to Young Peoples, but we go onwards and upwards,” he said.
One of the standout performers in the match was vice-captain Yuseri Apollis, a player with deep roots in the Strand area.
Some other key players were try scorers, versatile forward Maahir Galant, centre Lupho Ngxotheni and fullback Mueez Damon.
Despite the close scoreline, Brown remains confident that Primrose has what it takes to advance further when they meet Goodwood RFC in the semi-finals at City Parks on Saturday August 31. Kickoff is at 1.30pm.
“We are much better than what we showed today. If we can play our normal game, we will win easily – we are the best team in this division. It's a very good group of players, who are talented and very fit. They have a very good coach. They have all the ingredients they need to get a promotion, so I am very confident that next week at City Park we are going to win and get promoted.”
