Rising star from Save The Youth Boxing Club, Siya Njikelana on the attack during the club’s first boxing tournament in Philippi this past Saturday, February 8.
Save The Youth Boxing Club held its first tournament in the heart of Philippi on Saturday, February 8.
Supported by 30 boxers from Philippi, Khayelitsha and neighbouring communities, the event was attended by ward 80 councillor, Bennett Payiya, who donated medals.
Organiser of the tournament, Zolani Yako said the young boxers enjoyed an active day of sports and development.
“The tournament went very well. This was our first tournament. I had 15 boxers from my gym. Ten of them won gold medals. Our councillor, Mr Payiya brought us medals.” said Yako.
After the tournament, the coach had a chat with his boxers around what worked and where they can improve, over a cake and cooldrinks.
“Our children worked very well. None of them gave up. I am grateful to all that participated. We are waiting for next week now to go to Site C,” he said.
On Saturday February 22, Yako’s boxers, including a rising female prodigy, Siya Njikelana will be among the boxers who will showcase their skill during an open tournament hosted at the Site C taxi rank.
