Silvertown’s shotput prodigy aiming for a podium finish in Green Point
Norma Primary School’s Lucia Jensel is proving to be a shotput prodigy.
She finished second in shotput at the primary school champ of champs at Vygieskraal on Saturday, February 22.
It was the 10-year-old’s first ever shotput competition.
On Thursday, February 26, Lucia will be throwing for the Western Province competition championships at the Green Point Athletics Track.
The young athlete from Silvertown follows in her brothers Lucius’s footsteps.
Lucius took first place in shotput and discuss at Southern Zone championships in Green Point this past Saturday. Next weekend, he will be throwing at the provincial championships at UWC.
Proud of their achievement, their mother Leigh-ann Jensel, like her daughter, is also an active member of the Tantasport Softball Club.
This past weekend, Lucia's junior team narrowly lost to Westridge Yankees in the Cape Town Softball Association’s Grand Challenge. The youngster was emotional for missing the match, although she competed in the junior athletics for her primary school.
Last year, her grandmother, Dorothy Raynardt was honoured as a South African softball legend in George. While at the Turfhall Softball Stadium, cheering on Tanta, she expressed how proud she is with her children and grandchildren being active in sport.
“It’s Lucia’s first time ever competing. I am so proud of her she’s done well on her first time out. Both her and her brother receive training at Ultra Athletics Club. They are doing well,” said Raynardt.
Lucia said she is aiming for a podium finish.
