Professional boxer, Alex Kabangu, displayed a winning spirit against a stubborn Jimmy Mabundji in a Western Cape boxing convention welterweight thriller, hosted by Jackie Brice Boxing Promotions, at the Sunningdale Sports Complex, last Friday..
ADK, as he is better known, from Steve Newton Boxing, added to his win tally with a points decision win over the Brice Boxing Academy fighter, Mabundji, to make it six wins, three loses and three draws out of 12 fights.
Soon after judge Oscar Noels lifted ADK’s hand in victory, he took charge of the microphone from the ring announcer, Shepherd Dyani, to call out Pride Fighting Academy’s Dillon Solomons.
ADK says over the past few months the new Western Cape welterweight boxing champion, Solomons, had called him out, numerous times, on Instagram.
“I want Dillon next. He called me out four times via Instagram… After five years without fighting in Cape town, winning that fight was everything for me and my team, and Jimmy was the big name for me to challenge… My motivation is always to make my name bigger and make a legacy after me. Life is too short,” said ADK.
Meanwhile, just after the ADK and Mabundji fight, Solomons stopped Fhulufhelo Ramaliba to be crowned the new vacant provincial welterweight champion. The official, Sipho Ndongeni, counted out Ramaliba in the fourth round following a flurry of punches that forced him to take a knee.
Nicknamed “The King”, Solomons, fighting out of Table View, made it three wins in his four professional fights. He is coached by Mike Mouneimne, who is well known for producing and reviving athletes, including former WBC international super bantamweight champion, Mzuvukile “Old Bones” Magwaca.
“I am very happy to win the Western Cape belt. I am even happy to witness the Western Cape winning belts. I think before when guys won they were considered the champion but now there is an actual belt so that is motivating. My next mission is to fight for the South African championship. But we need to work our way up,” said Solomons.
Chuckling, Solomons said for him to become world champion, there are a couple of things he needs to sort out in his way.
“Alex called me out after his fight but that is because I have been calling him out a little bit. I think it will be a good fight between me and Alex. I don’t see anyone else beating Alex so he is considered one of the best in the Western Cape. I do want to go all the way to the top. I want to be considered the best in South Africa. So, I think it will be a good fight but I will beat Alex.
“Just to clear the air, there is no beef, I like Alex. When I first started boxing, I used to see him fight as a professional kick-boxer and I saw him make his debut in boxing. Fast forward years later … I am in a position to call him out,” he said.
