The race for the vacant Western Cape mini flyweight title is on, with Maxim Boxing Promotion ready to crown the new champion, at the Black Pool Hall in Salt River, on Saturday, June 1.
Headlining what promises to be a humdinger to the evening, Asavela Peter and Sandiso Centane are ready to dance.
Hailing from Khayelitsha and fighting under the watchful eye of Zola Koti at Future Champs in Philippi, Peter heads into the 10-round fight against Centane undefeated in three professional boxing matches.
Since making his pro debut in May last year, the Matthew Goniwe Comprehensive School’s matric pupil, Peter’s victories came by way of a knockout, a unanimous points decision and a technical knockout.
At only 18, Peter declared his intention to knock Centane out and claim the title for Khayelitsha.
Peter moved through the amateur ranks under promoter, Jeremy Bean since the tender age of 6. They have high hopes in the professional arena, which include a youth title with an international body in 2025, but first, they have a hill to climb ahead of them.
In his way stands Centane, a warrior of note, and a product of the Sisonke Boxing Gym in Imizamo Yethu.
Honing his skills under the watchful eye of Mvumelwano Thamela and Mitchell Mutava from Hardnox Boxfit Gym in town, Centane is no stranger to adversities.
A tough opponent, Centane is a five times former amateur champion, a national silver and bronze medalist.
“I’ve always been champion material coming from a good amateur background. It was about time,” said Centane.
With his professional record starting off slow, the 25-year-old Centane heads into the fight as the experienced fighter, after winning two out of his eight professional bouts.
“I’ve always been the people’s champion and my people believe in me. Come, June 1, we will outshine and outsmart. We will break Asavela and bring back the title to Hout Bay. I was the first boxer that brought a national medal. It is time to level up and be the first to bring a provincial title,” said Centane.
Maxim Boxing’s event is scheduled to start at 4pm.
