Victoria Cricket Club are enjoying a good start to the 2024/2025 cricket season.
Just last month their women’s hub team won the provincial tournament after beating Gugulethu Women’s Hub in Claremont.
Before that, their men’s first team booked a spot in the provincial T20 final against Pinelands Cricket Club, scheduled for Newlands, next month.
This past Saturday, December 7, Vics made light work of Hottentots Holland, in a Western Province Cricket Association First Division A one-day league match, at Chukker Road.
Vics won the toss and elected to bat first, setting a score of 242/10 in 49.5 overs.
Crucial batting by Marco Wyngard, Warrick Rhode and Alex Scullard saw Vics cruise past the 200 mark.
Wyngard scored 55 runs off 38 balls. Rhode scored 46 runs off 76 balls. Scullard hit 37 runs off 73 balls.
Under the scorching sun, Vics had a good day with the ball too, with Warren Ekstraal receiving three wickets for 18 runs in six overs. Reece Thompson picked up 2/12 runs in six overs, while Juan Collison got 2/39 runs in 10 overs.
Hottentots Holland’s batsmen, Na-eem Rhoda scored 38 runs off 57 balls and Shakoer Baderon scored 17 runs off 33 balls. Baderoen also picked up two wickets for 41 runs in five overs with the ball.
It took Vics 36.4 overs to dismantle Hottentots Holland for 122/10.
Head coach at Vics, Saadiek Davids said they are sitting comfortably at the top.
“The guys did well. We batted first and scored 242. We bowled them out 122 all-out. We won there with a bonus point,” he said.
Davids said they are shifting their focus to a top of the table clash against Rylands Cricket Club away.
“We are sitting pretty well at number one on the log. We are on 39 points. Rylands should be on 36 points, they also won. We play them this Saturday. It is going to be a good game of one versus two in Rylands,” said coach Davids.
