Healthcare workers at Victoria Hospital rolled up their sleeves to donate blood in support of the Western Cape Blood Service's life-saving efforts on Tuesday, October 7.

The initiative was spearheaded by Dr Yael Benjamin, an anaesthetist at Victoria Hospital, who was inspired to take action after her friend required urgent blood transfusions. Their experiences highlighted the critical need for regular blood donations and prompted her to rally her colleagues for the cause.

Dr Ebrahim Kriel, medical officer at the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, thanked the team and the donors. “As a previous recipient of blood, I can testify that each unit is truly life-saving,” he said.

According to a statement by Victoria Hospital, the staff turnout was exceptional, resulting in a total of 107 units of blood collected, enough to potentially save up to 321 lives, as one donation can save up to three people.

These donations will go on to support patients across the province, ranging from trauma victims and surgical patients to individuals with chronic conditions who rely on regular transfusions.
